BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The 2019 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread rapidly around the world since late 2019 and has a strong impact on the global health system. Rhinology is considered the subspecialty of the highest risk for COVID-19 exposure due to aerosol generation procedures. Patients also avoid visiting the hospital due to contagious risks. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the rhinology service at a tertiary referral hospital in central Taiwan.
METHODS: Based on the cumulative cases of COVID-19 in Taiwan and in Taichung, the post-endemic period was defined as from 2021 to 2022. We analyzed the service volume of the rhinology division during the 2 years before (2017 to 2018) and 2 years after (2021 to 2022) the endemic period.
RESULTS: We found significant drops after the endemic, in overall volumes of outpatients, inpatients, and olfaction tests. During the endemic period, septum and turbinate surgeries were fewer, but more sinus and tumor surgeries. Volumes of outpatient and inpatient services were significantly correlated with the prevalence of COVID-19 in Taiwan and in Taichung.
CONCLUSION: COVID-19 strongly impacted service volumes at the rhinology division, and altered practice patterns of health care workers.
